Mick Cassidy has launched his own plumbing company after leaving his hometown club.

The former backrower returned to the Warriors in late 2018 as head of youth.

And while he was disappointed to leave – a victim of the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic – he is excited about his new venture.

Cassidy, who played at Wigan from 1990 to 2004, said: “Sport in general is cutting costs and, while it was a bit disappointing, it was understandable in the circumstances.

"There are no hard feelings at all, I’m thankful to Wigan for the opportunity, they have been really good to me – no one expected Covid to come along and wreak the devastation that it has.

“But I thought now is a good time to try something new in my life.”

Cassidy hasn’t ruled out working in rugby league in the future but, for now, his focus is on MDC Plumbing and House Maintenance.

“It’s exciting and a bit scary at the same time, as it’s something I’ve never done before,” said the 47-year-old.

“I was a plumber when I was younger and I taught it at Wigan College for a couple of years, too. I’ve always done up my own properties over the years, too, so I’m doing house maintenance as well.

“Already, a few good friends who have put some work my way and it’s going well, I’m keeping busy.”

Cassidy, meanwhile, took part in a ‘coast to coast’ bike ride from Newcastle to Workington in memory of Kim Bradburn, a trainer partner at RM Fitness who recently passed away.

He thanked those who have donated and helped raise more than £1,000 for the Dog’s Trust, a charity close to her heart.
